Today In History: Battle of Long Island
August 27th: Today in 1776 the British and American Rebels fought one of the largest battles of the American Revolution at the Battle of Long Island. As usual the battle went poorly for the Americans, led by George Washington, who established his sterling record of forgetting the importance of Flanks at this battle. George was a great strategic general, but normally a poor field general and this battle fit his normal performance to a Tee. This is also the first battle in which the Maryland troops charged the British with the bayonet, they did this often enough to earn the state the nickname of the ‘Old Line State‘.
