A Couple of History Links
Here are a couple of interesting history links:
If you are a World War One history buff you know the story of Alvin York capturing a ton of German soldiers almost single handed. A classic American war story with a reluctant hero. Now the History Network has posted up an article on the same encounter from the German point of view. Good stuff.
Also of interest this morning is a page on talking like you were in the early 19th century. The author uses Joseph Plum Martin’s Private Yankee-Doodle as his basis and finds many interesting words to spice up your conversations with. I you watched the PBS Revolution you will remember frequent quotes from Martin, who the reader always pronounced with a broad Joseph Plum Maaaaahtin. The only caveat I would give is that some of the words brought out may be from very regional usage, but a fun read anyway.
Via Cliopatria and BoingBoing respectively.
