Today In History: Death of Martha
September 1rst: Today in 1914 Martha, the last Passenger Pigeon died in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo. Her body was sent to the Smithsonian where it was a skinned and stuffed then put on display. Apparently even this last tribute to the Passenger Pigeon is being closed down. Passenger pigeons once filled the sky they were so common, but were hunted knowingly to extinction. Unlike the buffalo, the Passenger Pigeon won’t be coming back.

Hmmm… I seem to remember reading somewhere that scientists were planning to try a “Jurassic Park” using the recently rediscovered remains of a Dodo bird. There seem to be plenty of Passenger Pigeon remains, judging from the pictures in the wiki article. I wonder if they could bring it back.

Do you really want to be pursued by a flock of flesh eating passenger pigeons!?
