Today In History: The Great Fire of London Starts
September 2nd: Today in 1666 a small fire broke out in a bakery that spread and burned for three days, the Great Fire of London. The fire destroyed the majority of London, both inside and outside the walls but was remarkable in how few died, with most estimates ranging from 5 to 20. The city before the fire had been mostly built of wood with thatched roofs being quite common. After the fire construction in the city was almost all brick and the re-built Globe Theatre in the 1990s being the first thatched roof allowed in London since the great fire.
