Today In History: The Hanapepe Massacre

September 9th: Today in 1924 striking Filipino workers and policemen clashed on the island of Kauai in Hawaii leaving twenty dead in what is known as the Hanapepe Massacre. Sixteen of the dead were strikers and four were policemen. The killings resulted in the purchase of considerable arms by the anti-union forces and new laws designed to prevent workers from striking. It always surprises me how many of these incidents occurred and how accepted they were at one time, just part of doing business it seemed.

  1. Peter J. Bassett Says:

Some did accept this incident at the time and said so in print in their own newspaper. Read the Honolulu Times and W.K. Bassett’s editorial. This may have gotten him threatened with criminal syndicalism and removed from Hawaii.
