Today In History: Start of Emancipation

September 22nd: Today in 1862 the first part of the Emancipation Proclamation is released by President Abraham Lincoln. It declared that all slaves in parts of the nation not under Union control would be freed on January 1, 1863. This was a first step, and some say not very bold as it didn’t free slaves actually in Union control, but it was a huge measure in the eyes of the world and within three years all slaves in the United States were freed.
