Today in History: First Basketball Game
December 15th: Today in 1891 James Naismith started the modern game of Basketball by coming up with thirteen rules, two teams of nine players and peach crates nailed to the opposite sides of a gym. I wonder what he would think about the game as it is played now? Amazing it was only started in 1891, it must have caught on fast as my Grandmother played it competitively when she was in school in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The only sport I can think of to blow up that fast in my lifetime is snowboarding. From nowhere to common in about twenty years.

Bet it didn’t have the slugfest like the one between the Nix and the Nuggets. Attacking other players and fans seems to be getting more and more popular in professional sports. Think fighting will catch on for snowboarders?

I’ve heard rumors that basketballs may start appearing at UFC bouts.
