Today In History: Dade Massacre
December 28th:Today in 1835 a US Army column of 108 men commanded by Major Francis Dade was ambushed by Seminole Indians. Only two US Soldiers survived the ambush and one of them died shortly after of his wounds. The ambush was the start of the Second Seminole War in which the Seminole Indians were resisting forced relocation. The Seminoles were fighting in terrain that suited their style of ambush combat well and consistently got the better of the Army in numerous small engagements however the pressure of more troops and settlers drove the Seminoles back into a small unofficial reservation in the Everglades.
Edit: A great photo set of a reenactment can be found here. These are unusually good photos.
