Today In History: Prohibition Begins

January 16th: Today in 1920 under the terms of the 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution banning the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors in the United States Prohibition began. The law spawned massive disobedience and was repealed thirteen years later by the 21rst Amendment. Interestingly, the 18th Amendment is the only constitutional amendment to be directly repealed by another amendment.

Prohibition did however make many, many mobsters very rich before it was repealed, however I am certain that any similarity between prohibition and the ‘War on Drugs‘ is just passing coincidence.
