February 16th: Today in 1959 Fidel Castro takes his lifetime post as Premier of Cuba. Castros assumption of power ended the hopes for a democratic Cuba during his lifetime and began a downward spiral in relations with the United States that continues to this day despite the island nations close proximity to the US.
