Chinese Zoos Are More Fun

OK, this article goes a long way towards showing why Chinese zoos are more fun, but my favorite quote is

taunted the reptiles with sticks and catapults

That just sounds cool doesn’t it! When was the last time you got to use a siege engine at an American zoo? After this story I expect kids realized that catapults are undergunned and have started to use trebuchets, ballistas and onagers.

If, for some reason, it became necessary for me to taunt an alligator, I would want to do it from catapult range. I can imagine loading one up with, say… turkey carcasses, shooting them way over the reptile’s head and yelling “Hey! Scale boy! Bet you wish you could jump, huh? I’m gonna shoot another one. You won’t get it either! Nya nya!”

Actually, a very similar thing just happened in Denver, involving a keeper and a jaguar, I believe, on a day we were trying to take the kids to the zoo. (We went to the aquarium instead, where no one had been recently mauled by a shark). Sadly, Denver officials just don’t have the same pizzazz in choice of subduing equipment. At least they didn’t call Philly for advice.
