Good Noises: The Puppini Sisters The Rise & Fall of Ruby Woo
The Puppini Sisters sound is a deliberate throwback to the Andrews Sisters and they are very good at capturing the style. I picked up both their albums, Betcha Bottom Dollar and their newest album, The Rise and Fall of Ruby Woo and while I like both I think the second album is better on a number of fronts.
On the first album the Puppini Sisters cover a number of Andrews standards like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and Jeepers Creepers and they don’t really measure up to the originals. They sound too formal compared to the swing that the Andrews Sisters put into the songs, while the Puppini’s aren’t terrible they clearly hadn’t mastered the songs yet. Their original song Sisters on the other hand works well, and they also do better on the album’s cover songs. The cover songs have a bit of a novelty song feel to them, but they are not bad by any means.
The latest album is stronger on all fronts. The Sisters sound more relaxed in all the songs, mostly sounding like they are having fun rather than working at it, something the Andrews Sisters mastered in their time. The weakest song is another classic cover, It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) which never really takes off, but the cover songs on this album are better, with both Spooky and Walk Like An Egyptian holding up well for me. The best song on the album is an original, Jilted, which works well and has found space on my favorites list on the ipod.
Both albums are available on Amazon download which is where I grabbed them. They don’t have any download samples available, but their myspace page lets you play some of their songs and I have put their video for Jilted below.

“Sisters” is not a Puppini original. The song dates back to the Clooney sisters from the movie “White Christmas”.

Thanks Paul, didn’t know that one, still the standout song for me on the album, it sounds less stressed than the other covers of old standards.

They have two originals on the Ruby Woo album and aside from being similarly themed, they were the stand outs for me.
