The Real Dunwich Horror
Most readers of this site will know Dunwich more for HP Lovecraft’s version than for the historical city, but the News For Medievalists site points out a story in the London Times I missed about the historical city, long lost to the sea. Dunwich was once one of the most powerful cities in England, one of the most prosperous ports in the country with a large market and major harbor. All that went away in series of major storms starting in the 13th century that wiped the city away and left a small village that is there today. Now archeologists are starting a major project to study the city that is left under the water using modern scanning tools. Really cool news.
