Today In History: Battle of Dunbar
April 27th: Today in 1296 Edward I won yet another battle in the long series of battles that lead to his nickname as the Hammer of Scotland. In this battle the smaller English army tempted the Scots into an ill conceived charge and then massacred the Scots after the charge failed. Edward has been rewarded in modern times by being portrayed as a blithering mad man in Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, but history gets the last laugh for anyone who looks at the record. Another battle fought near Dunbar in 1650 gave Cromwell control of Scotland.
