Being a Hero is Hard Work

This lady is a hero, but the story is filled with lots of little cues on why being a real hero is hard. Her story in short is that she got a bid for work on home repairs, that lead her to expose massive fraud but after six years her home still wasn’t fixed. The State Auditors think she is a hero, if you read the story you will think so to, but it didn’t get her much and she won’t get a statue, she just stuck to her guns, did what was right. That sadly is the fate of most heroes and why so few people have the gumption to stick it out and become one when their chance comes up.

Follow Up: Harder to be a hero than I thought. She died at home just as her story made the paper.

She waited so many years for repairs, exposed huge amounts of fraud (for which the city tried to get her to reimburse them for legal fees!) and she got absolutely nothing for it except a final promise to do what they should’ve done in June of 2001? Good Heavens!

That sounds like a deterrent if I’ve ever heard of one!

True stories of heroism are almost always discouraging to the rest of us. That is part of the reason there are so few heroes.
