Today In History: Los Angeles Riots
April 29th: Today in 1992 was the start of the Los Angeles riots that followed the aquittal of police officers accused of beating Rodney King. Over the next three days over fifty people died and many businesses were looted and destroyed. I remember several days before the riots broke out I saw a short CNN piece on how a major grocery chain had just opened a new store in the inner city, the first since the riots of the 1960s. The people they interviewed thanked them for helping the neighborhood and giving the people in the city a chance. Days later I watched the store being looted and thought ‘that will teach the grocery store for taking a chance on LA‘.
