Today In History: Buffalo Bill’s First Wild West Show*
May 1rst: Today in 1883 is reported to be the day of the first Wild West Show performance by Buffalo Bill Cody. Buffalo Bill was one of the first world superstars of the modern age and he took the culture of the American West around the world during the Thirty years he toured. Buffalo Bill was known to be a conservationist, despite his one time career of buffalo hunter, and he was regarded as very pro indian, even though his shows featured sterotypical cowboy and indian fights. He made showed the world Sitting Bull and a woman marksman, Annie Oakley. He appears to have been arrogant and maybe a little mad, like many who lead remarkable lives.
*only found the reference to the first show being on May 1rst in one place. Normally I like a little more before marking a date.
