Two dark horse candidates for the Summer of Fear 2009 contest have popped into today’s news, the Chimpanzee and the Coyote! The chimp mauled a woman in Connecticut and had to be gunned down by the police to end his rampage. The Chimp article is a Summer of Fear classic template, mentioning how dangerous the animal is and including past attacks such as one where the victim has his genitals ripped off. This is a high scoring fear inducing story.

The coyote was rabid, which loses him points, and it attacked a girl waiting for her school bus in South Carolina. Sadly this story focuses on the positive and and doesn’t do much fear mongering, again costing the coyote points. Still nice to have some new candidates in the media hype for Summer of Fear 2009!

In defense of the coyote, a 22 revolver was emptied into it… including a shot fired while the barrel was in its mouth as it tried to attack the wielder… it continued its attack and was still finally able to run away to die. That puts some fear into me.

Valid points, but it was it the rabies or the coyote?

  3. Bill Says:

Maybe rabies should get its own Summer of Fear entry?

The chimp, Travis, likewise took a fair amount of damage, but still went off on its own and died inside the house. It wasn’t rabid, just a full grown chimpanzee. It doesn’t look good for coyotes to get the prize this year.
