Today In History: Black Hole of Calcutta

June 20th: Today in 1756 a group of 64 to 69 prisoners were stuffed into a tiny cell and left there overnight. By morning an estimated 43 had died from the heat or suffacation in what came to be known as the Black Hole of Calcutta. This incident inflamed English public opinion against the native rulers of India and helped the English to justify their take over of the sub-continent.
