July 1rst: Today in 1916 was the first day of the Battle of the Somme in which 20,000 british troops died on the first day and another 40,000 were wounded. In today’s climate such losses are unimaginable, but at the time it was just another day in a long war. A good human perspective on the tragedy of the day can be found here.
