Today In History: Fellowship Of The Ring Published

July 29th: Today in 1954 The Fellowship Of The Ring was, the first book of the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy was published. Literary types pretty much dismiss the book and the series, but there is no doubt in my mind the Lord Of The Rings were some of the most influential books of the 20th century. They have a massive shared following and influenced our culture in a direct and obvious way. The movies have brought a whole new audience to the books and I have no doubt that they will continue to influence the world and irk English Lit professors for a long time yet. Just for giggles, see which member of the fellowship you are here. I am Sam apparently….

  1. Bill Says:

    Me too…

  2. Hjalti Says:

Strider, but I’m not buyin’ it.

  3. Leta Says:

I am also Strider, which is accurate only if one has never met me.

  4. Carol Says:

    I’m Gandalf.

  5. David Says:

I appear to be Legolas. I didn’t think my ears were that pointy though…

  6. Brett Says:

Ok, tally so far, Bill and I are chubby good natured sidekicks, Leta and Hjalti are secretly the King and Queen of the pure blood humans, Carol is an arch angel who has forgotten her real powers and purpose and wanders around putting on fireworks shows and Dave is an elven ninja. Sounds pretty accurate to me….

  7. Stacey Says:

Frodo? Um… I bought a new ring in New Mexico, does that count?

  8. Todd Says:

Well now I know it’s broken:

Also known variously as Strider, the Dunedan and Isildur’s Heir, Aragorn son of Arathorn was a member of the Fellowship of the Ring, charged with the task of seeing the Ring and its bearer, Frodo Baggins, safely to the Crack of Doom. Following the War of the Ring, Aragorn took his rightful place as King.
