Today In History: Last ‘Old Style’ Beetle Made
July 30th: Today in 2003 the last old style VW Beetle was made in Mexico. I am not a car guy, and I have never really wanted an old school VW Beetle, but I did have many rides in my good friend Paul’s old Beetle. I always sounded like it was about to blow up at highway speeds and you could watch the highway go by thru the holes in the floor boards but it got us to school pretty reliably. I still remember having to block the holes when driving on wet days so you didn’t get splashed. Good times…

I was going through a pile of old papers that my Dad gave me the other day and came across these stats from a trip he took in a VW Beetle. We had one, one of very few in South America at the time, when we lived in Paraguay. When we moved back to the states (1964), Mom and the kids flew, and Dad drove home on what was not yet then the Pan American Highway.

Total Land Milage: 10,822
Total Gas: 433 Gallons
Vehicle range on main and reserve Tanks: 800 miles
Total tank Capacity: 34.4 Gallons
MPG: 24.2
Gas Expenses: $128.00
Total Expenses:1,406.36
Cost per Mile: 10 cents.
I won’t tell about the time the six of us took a trip from Baltimore to New Mexico in the VW, in the Summer. Ouch.

Just finished a roadtrip to New Mexico in a minivan. Can’t fathom doing the same trip in a VW. Mileage was about the same, though.
