Today In History: Battle of the Nile Starts
August 1rst: On the evening of August 1rst 1798 the French and English fleets began the Battle of the Nile. This was the battle that really set Admiral Nelson‘s reputation and led to the English fleets dominance of the French fleet thruout the Napoleanic Wars. This is also where the poem Casabianca, which starts ‘The boy stood on the burning deck..*’ is set.
