Today In History: World Turned Upside Down

October 19th: Today in 1781 General Cornwallis surrenders the largest British field army in America to General Washington at Yorktown. Traditionally this is considered the end of the American Revolution, but there were many small battles that occured after this. It was however a huge blow and the battle that forced England to concede that the Untited States were truly going to be an independant nation. George Washington won at Yorktown despite losing nearly all the major field battles he commanded. I am convinced he never did learn what a ‘flank’ was, but in the end his perseverence and strategic vision more than made up for it.
