October 20th: Today in 1955 Return of the King was published, the last of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books. I read this series of books first in fifth or six grade after having the first two books read to me by our babysitter Debbie. A true hero, she refused to read my sister and I the third book saying we would have to read them ourselves. I went to the library and checked out the third book but it disappeared. Couldn’t find it anywhere. Turns out that Debbie had grabbed it as she was giving me the series for Christmas and didn’t want me to finish it before I got them. This was a good lesson on two topics, one the value of a good book, and two the importance of being sneaky now and then. Anyhow, all was well that ended well, the library got its book back and I started to become an even more voracious reader.
