Today In History: Washington Resigns
December 23rd: Today in 1783 George Washington reseigned as Commander-In-Chief of the Continental Army. The move was filled with symbolism, it was intended to show that the military should always be subordinate to the civilian government in the United States and it set a precedent that worked exactly as Washington intended it to. He may have been a lousy field general and a rich snob, but he was a very shrewd man when it came to politics and I believe he is continually underrated among the founding fathers (or dead white men as they are now known).
