Today In History: Challenger Explosion

January 28th: Twenty years ago in 1986 the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up shortly after lift off. I remember when I heard the news I thought they were joking. Sadly, there weren’t joking.

Wow. 20 years. I was sitting in the living room of my Williamsburg, VA appartment making chainmail with Fred Scholpp for Jamestown when the William and Mary station we were listening to announced it. The DJ was crying.

I was driving back to work from getting lunch (Roy Rogers). First the announcer broke in with the count down… “three… two… one… there it goes. Back to our regularly scheduled programming.” I turned the corner into my office parking lot (on the U of Md College Park campus) thinking “I really want to do that some day.” I was about to turn the ignition off when the announcer broke back in with the news. I was almost physically sick.

We got the news late, but Tammy and I were picking up our friend Duke, who was and is crazy about planes and space flight, and he told us. We turned on the news and it was a terrible day.
I feel bad for all the brave lives lost that day. I’ve met McAllife’s mom, she and the college our mom went to were starting up some type of foundation or scholarship in her honor and she was at NPR. Framingham Teacher’s College won’t forget her.
