Today In History: First Victoria Crosses Given Out

January 29th: Today in 1856 the first Victoria Crosses were given out to soldiers for herioc acts during the Crimean War. This award is still the highest medal for valor in the British army today, even as the army is being disassembled and marginalized in modern Britain. How bad is it getting there? Soldiers are talking about starting to unionize as that may be the only way they can get decent treatment from the government.
