February 1rst: Today in 2003 the Shuttle Columbia disintegrated while trying to land. I do remember this, and it was a tragedy, but it doesn’t have anywhere near the emotional impact the Challenger disaster had for me. I think Challenger was the moment where we realised that it had never been as safe and easy at Nasa had made it look for years. Post Challenger it just seems like Nasa can do no right, they have become just another government agency trying to do just enough to get by, not really excelling anymore.
