Today In History: Slave Trade Act passes in England in 1807

While not ending slavery in the British Empire the Slave Trade Act banned British ships from taking part in the slave trade and fined captains £100 per slave found on board their ships. This act was a signifigant step in the battle to end the Atlantic slave trade, but didn’t stop the trade. This was the result of years of lobbying by anti-slavery campaigners in the UK and led to full abolition in 1833. This in turn increase the pressure on the US to abolish slavery as well. Every step along the the path is a day worth celebrating.
