Today In History: The Bloody Baron Conquers Mongolia
March 13th: Today in 1921 Baron Roman Ungern von Sternberg announces to the world that he now rules Mongolia. Called the Mad Baron or the Bloodly Baron he set the model for the mad adventuring villain of pulp fiction. He was a former officer in the Russian Army who was driven to the Asian frontier by the revolution. He became a mystical warlord in the far east and after conquring Mongolia came to believe he was Ghengis Khan reincarnated. He did not rule long, but his name is still used in that part of the world as a boogie man to scare children.
