Today In History: Repeal of the Stamp Act
March 18th: Today in 1766 the Stamp Act was repealed by Parliment taking effect on May 1rst. This was a victory for the colonists but Parliment tempered it with the passage of the Declaratory Act, which said that Parliment held final authority for all laws in the colonies, and the victory was forgotten by the later passage of the Townsend Acts, which were considered far worse than the old Stamp law had been.
