Today In History: The Battle of Great Severn

March 25th: Today in 1655 a small force backing the traditional government of Maryland fought and lost the battle Battle of Great Severn to force favoring Puritan rule of the state. The Puritans ran the state for only two years before recognizing the States Proprietor, Lord Baltimore, and restoring a government of religious tolerance. The battle took place near what is now Annapolis, the State Capitol of Maryland and is largely forgotten in the state but the next time someone asks you about Civil War battlefields in Maryland you can ask them which Civil War they mean, the English or the American Civil War…..
