May 13th: Today in 1787 the First Fleet set sail from England to establish the Penal Colony of Botany Bay in Australia. After the American Revolution denied the use of Georgia to the British it took years to establish another penal colony but once set up Britain used Australia for transport until 1868. Apparently no definitive list exists of who was on the First Fleet, but this site publishes the most accepted list.
