June 1rst: Today in 1866 a private army of volunteers invaded Canada from the USA in an attempt to free Ireland from Britain. Seem confusing to you? Does to me as well, but there is some twisted logic to it all. The volunteers were mostly Irish immigrants who had served in the Union army in the US Civil War, they thought that by striking Canada it would highlight their arguments to the world about the unfairness of the British rule in Ireland. It didn’t work very well as you may have guessed.
