Today In History: Death Of Miyamoto Musashi

June 13th: Today in 1645 Miyamoto Musashi author of the Book of Five Rings died. His books had a tremendous impact on Samurai culture and his duels are studied today and still controversial. From growing up in Hawaii where the Samurai show was my replacement for the westerns I would have been watching on TV elsewhere I have always been interested in Japanese history and you can see Musashi’s influence in many places. I have to admit I prefer the harsher and more bitter Hagakure by Yamamoto Tsunetomo to Musashi’s works, but then I am a grumpy guy.

Grumpy Guy? I thought that was Buckley?
I loved all the samurai shows! I remember the one with the Yagyu clan, but I can’t remember the title. They all blur now that I’m an old lady (at 19!).
Still, harsh code of living no matter the text one chooses. Musashi was a badass cowboy!

They show was Yagyu Ichizoku no Inbo (or the Yagyu Conspiracy in english, but we never saw the show in english) available here for a mere $500 for the series. Gah I wish I was rich. I can remember Sonny Chiba\’s growl as he said his name YAGYU JUBEI ABARETABI just before he went all ginzu on the bad guys. Brilliant TV which helped warp my young mind.
