Today In History: King John Signs The Magna Carta

June 15th: Today in 1215 King John put his royal seal on the Magna Carta, establishing the principal the people have rights under law in English law. Naturally he wouldn’t be King John if he didn’t immediately renounce the Magna Carta once he was away from his rebellious barons, but in the end a toned down version of it stuck and became the law of the land. I have seen the copy at Lincoln Castle and it is amazing how simple some of the points are, yet they were very radical when they were introduced.

The 2 documents that have moved me the most were the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence. Seeing them both… Wow.

I remember seeing one of the copies of Magna Carta when it was on tour, displayed at the National Archives!

That was the Lincoln copy, it was also stored here at the National Archive during the Second World War.
