Today In History: The Battle of Vinegar Hill
June 21rst: Today in 1798 the English army drove off an Irish army at the Battle of Vinegar Hill. The defeat shifted the strategy of the Irish during their rebellion from one of seeking to hold ground to a hit and run campaign. This battle shouldn’t be confused with the 1804 Battle of Vinegar Hill even though both battles were rebellions against oppresive English rule and led to harsh repressive vengence because that would be wrong. No, this isn’t pick on the English week here either….
