Today In History: Prudence Crandall Arrested

June 27th: Today in 1833 Prudence Crandall was arrested for running a school for black girls in Connecticut. Earlier she had caused scandal by admitting Sarah Harris, a black woman, to her girls school creating the first integrated school in the USA, but a parent’s boycott forced her to set up a separate school for black girls. Connecticut responded by making her school illegal, but it was the threat of violence that finally forced the school to close. Today Prudence Crandall is the Connecticut state heroine.
