Today In History: Calvin Coolidge Becomes President

August 3rd: Today in 1921 following the death of Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as President of the United States by his father, a notary public, in his parents log cabin. This site has a good Coolidge bio and the story of the death of his son from an infected foot blister is touching to read for any parent.

Two humorous Coolidge quotes ( found here ) that I ran across in various bios but can’t prove out fully:

It is said that a White House dinner guest once made a bet with her friends that she could get the president Coolidge to say at least three words during the course of the meal. Upon telling of her wager, he replied simply with the words “You lose.”

Not long after their marriage Coolidge handed his wife a bag with 52 pairs of holey socks. Grace’s reply was “Did you marry me to darn your socks?” Without cracking a smile and with his usual seriousness, Calvin answered, “No, but I find it mighty handy.”
