Today In History: The Battle of Blenheim
August 13th: Today in 1704 occurred one of those truly important battles in history that hardly anybody has heard of now, The Battle of Blenheim. The battle was a huge turning point in European history as it all but ended the French King‘s attempts to dominate all of Europe, one hundred years before Napoleon briefly accomplished it. The Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill, commanded the forces facing the French and his audacious maneuver of the army before the battle ensured his success on the day of the battle, the fighting was hard and bloody all day long. Over 30,000 men fell dead or wounded in the battle, a massive toll of human loss remembered in the poem The Battle of Blenheim.

Great anti-war poem! 30,000 boggles the mind! It sounds like the toll that Chinese battles could rack up.

Europe is every bit as capable of mass slaughter as anyone else is, but yes, that is a lot of people killed and wounded.
