Emily Carroll’s new comic, The Prince and Sea is a short tragic story and well worth reading. I enjoyed her His Face All Red strip and was very pleased to see this one as well. As ever check her web site for some great illustrations as well.

I found this listed on a comics site that I forgot to bookmark for a credit but I thought I would share this nice little creepy web comic called His Face All Red by Emily Carroll. It is well illustrated, short and still manages to creep me out nicely. A bit late for Halloween but well worth a look as is Emily Carroll’s website with samples of her illustrations.

Supernatural Collective Noun Chart

I Only Look At The Pictures

Sigh, I must have only been looking at the pictures, I didn’t notice Kate Beaton has a new website for her cartoons complete with archives. I was surprised she stayed on Live Journal so long as her primary base, but even though I must have skipped some of them at some point I hope she keeps up with the elaboration she gave there.

One of my favorite web cartoonists is featured in this month’s Dark Horse Presents from Dark Horse Comics, check out Kate Beaton’s take on Darwin. I am glad to see her getting attention, her comics are the best history comics on the web.

Two Sad Passings

Two pieces of very sad news today. The first and saddest is the passing of Corky Trinadad, the editorial cartoonist for the Honolulu Star Bulletin. He was simply an amazing cartoonist, often producing two cartoons a day, one on local issues and one on national issues. He was sharp and cutting on both the local and the world level but I loved his local cartoons which often brought the Hawaii political scene into sharp focus. Over the last couple of years he has taken more and long breaks and I was always frustrated when I went to the paper and his cartoon wasn’t there, now I know it was because he was battling cancer. I will miss his work tremendously and give my sincere condolences to his family.

The other passing isn’t as tragic, but it saddens me as it is another great local cartoon passing. Artist Brad Guigar has ended his fantastic strip about the city of Philadelphia, Phables. This appears to be a decision by the paper it was appearing in as well as a decision by Mr. Guigar to focus on his other strips. If you didn’t read Phables you missed a great series that again brought something wonderful and rare, an honest humorous look at the heart of a city. The strips are being released as a book and I have pre-ordered it, but it is very sad to see this great strip end.

Dungeon and Dragons Comics

Orcs at Monster Manual Comix

What’s that? You need old school Dungeons and Dragons comics to help you through the day? You are in luck, I have two for you.

The first is Rich Morris’s Yet Another Fantasy Game Comic. The story starts with the improbable love story a female goblin and a beholder then ranges all over the classic D&D world. The art in this has a rough draft feel to it, but it is a very pro rough draft most of the time. This one can get rude with mild nudity and lots of adult humor, but it never gets anything past a PG-13 or a 1970s R. The story is a long one, the link sends you to the first strip, read a couple a day until you catch up.

The second is Lore Sjöberg’s Monster Manual Comix, which is a pretty good look at the absurdity of the usual D&D monsters. Both comics are funny, but Lore’s is more like a traditional newspaper gag strip without a storyline. Lor’s site has lots of other good stuff spilling over from his gig as Wired’s funny guy.

Advertising, Ack!

I don’t like to post up ads for people who make more in a day than I make in a lifetime but this advertising clip of Hellboy on The Actor’s Studio that they released as a mini ad made me laugh. The new movie may well be terrible, I liked the last one a ton but that isn’t a predictor, but Comic Book Movies has a great page with all these mini ads and most are pretty funny.
