What Would You Do?

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Marginal Revolution has an interesting post and comments on what to do if you suddenly find yourself in the year 1000. Interesting points include how we would stand out for our height, how soft our hands are (the old Khmer Rouge standby) and how vulnerable we would be to the diseases of the era. [...]

The Real Dunwich Horror

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Most readers of this site will know Dunwich more for HP Lovecraft’s version than for the historical city, but the News For Medievalists site points out a story in the London Times I missed about the historical city, long lost to the sea. Dunwich was once one of the most powerful cities in England, one [...]

Summer of Fear Nears, Who Will Win This Year’s Contest?

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

This year seems to be slow for animal panic stories to me. We have Coyotes, Sharks and Squirrels all running close but I am disappointed by the showing from fan favorites, the bear so far. Anyhow, here are squirrels burning down someone’s home because they are evil little monsters.

The Stone Circles of Gobekli Tepe

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

This is an interesting story I missed in the Guardian, but Cronaca didn’t, about the stone circles of Gobekli Tepe which have been dated about 7,000 years earlier than Stone Henge in pre-agricultural history. Nothing that sophisticated has been found from that far back.
Compared with Stonehenge, they are humble affairs. None of the circles excavated [...]

Hark! A Vagrant = Historical Webcomic Genius

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Hark! A Vagrant is a brilliant Live Journal comic that features Kate Beaton’s take on her life and history. Her Hastings comic is fantastic, even better after being colored by a fan. Even better the author is a Canadian, so this counts as a cultural comic strip! This is one of the best history [...]

Edible Warfare

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

I missed this when it passed around a month or so ago. Just stumbled across it and think it is brilliant.
An abridged history of American-centric warfare, from WWII to present day, told through the foods of the countries in conflict.

I Am Ozymandias

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

Once the empire fades, what is left?
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter’d visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp’d on [...]

The End Of Feudalism?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Is it the end of Feudalism? Sark finally allows universal suffrage.

Hold The Bastard Accountable

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Ok, I do have some sympathy for the descendants of Admiral Byng, but not much really. They have put a petition to Parliment to ‘restore his honor’, but not pardon him. They say
It has been a long time … but if we were moved by the families of World War One, which was a long [...]
