Summer of Fear: Hackers

The neighbor from hell story is always a winner and this story of a hacker* abusing his neighbor’s wi-fi is a classic. I am actually surprised this doesn’t happen more often, but the real hero of the story is the victim’s company IT guy. People often forget that everything you do on the internet is in a log file somewhere.

* Sorry Bill, we lost the war for the word hacker a long time ago.

A Very Specific Niche

One of the keys for success on the interwebs is to have a specific niche, mine doesn’t but I don’t always listen to good advice sadly. I have found a site however that is very well targeted indeed, it is Cutting Open an Animal and Crawling Inside to Survive a Storm in the Wild and it is about exactly what it says in the title. You never know when you will need this kind of specific info.

Secret Questions

Many banks use secret questions to help verify your identity. Often these are easily guessable or googleable things like your Mother’s maiden name or where you went to High School, but some banks are now allowing you to make your own questions, which is a good thing as this will be much harder to break. However, this is the greatest response to creating your own questions I have ever seen. I rarely laugh out loud (or LOL) for real, but as I imagined the poor banker reading these I was laughing like a mad man. Not work safe however if you have someone reading over your shoulder.

I love websites that have a passion for something and aren’t afraid to show it. Sites that tear things down are easy, sites that show you great things you may have missed are much harder. That is why I love Scouting New York. The blog is by a film location scout and his love of the city is clear. He shows us the little details and hidden spots in the city as he finds them and he makes them all interesting. One of my favorite pick me up sites.
