Royal Wedding As Seen By Commoners

I am absolutely disinterested in the Royal Wedding. I have to think a moment before I can tell you who is even getting hitched, and I have only picked that up from media saturation. As an American, I am pleased I don’t have a dog in the fight at all. As an American I find the Monarchy ‘quaint’ and an interesting cultural throw back for the English.

If I were English I like to think I would feel what Simon from the Indelicates feels. I know in practice it doesn’t mean much, but I am happy to be a citizen and not a subject. I love the Indelicates because they are the closest thing to the core of angry rock and roll I have found in a modern band. They just won’t shut up and play nice and I love that.

While reading the rant I came across the first video from the Indelicate’s next album and enjoyed it as well. Check it out below:

Boing Boing just ran an excellent series on cultural roots of music and how blind most are to them. It runs fifteen parts, each illustrated by a video and covers country, soul, blues, bluegrass, classical and each is worth watching. I love following the roots of music, as a society we ignore so much excellent music, it is nice to see some really great music highlighted. This is the first one, I think they are all worth watching.

Singer Kate McGarrigle has died, she is well known to folk fans, but less known to the general public. Her Matapedia album, done with her sister Anna, is in my top five folk albums of all time.

SXSW Samples

I am about one quarter of the way done listening to the SXSW samples for this year. The ones I like best so far can be found here. It is a real mix of genres, with a lot of Rock, some Hip-Hop, some Electronic, and a fair bit of Folk. Folk and Country are at a disadvantage and will pick up more later as I often don’t warm to slower songs on the first listen. I seem to have missed marking up some of the Jazz I liked so far, but I won’t double back until I am done. So far a little less than one in ten has caught my ear. My favorite so far is Josiah Wordworth’s Witch Hunt, but there is some very good stuff among the samples.

If you haven’t seen Sita Sings The Blues you really should. It is very good and available for free. I have heard good things about it for quite awhile, but finally watched it yesterday and was very impressed. You can watch it on some streaming sites or download a HD file and watch it with Quicktime in HD.

SXSW 2009

The annual South by South West Music Festival starts next weekend in Austin, Tx. This is the mother of all music shows for new artists and attending one of these is on my list of things to do before I die. Every year they release samples from the artists, last year this was 761 songs, this year it is over 1,200. The genres range all over hip-hop, world, jazz, rock, folk and many more are represented. Every year I down load all the samples and go through them, last year out of 761 songs I marked 138 of them as very good. This year has over 1,200 samples, well over two solid days of music to listen to, wish me luck. Please note, these are legal artist’s samples, if you like an artist support them or they will go away.
