September 27th: Today in 1822 Jean-François Champollion announces he has translated the Rosetta Stone, giving the world the ability to read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs for the first time since the language was lost in antiquity.

Today In History: Francis Drake Completes Round the World Sail

September 26th: Today in 1580 Francis Drake completed his trip sailing around the world and returned to England with treasure robbed from the Spanish. The trip took three years and led to the British claims of control of New Albion (roughly from San Fransisco north along the Pacific coast).
