September 19th: Today in 1982 Scott Fahlman is credited with the birth of the smiley emoticon in a posting to BBS. I am not a huge emoticon fan, but if they have to be there I always prefer the semi-clever ascii ones to the more common gif ones you see now.

Jeep Fixes Flying Aircraft

This is a pretty wild story about a light airplane with a land gear problem that is fixed for them by guys on the ground driving under the flying plane and fixing the stuck gear with a pole. Pretty incredible.

September 17th: Today in 1859 Joshua A. Norton proclaimed himself Emperor Norton I of the United States. He reigned in San Fransico (where else?) until his death in 1880 which ended the Norton Dynasty. Long live the Emperor!

Google Maps Used To Find Roman Villa

This is an interesting story about a man who was using Google Maps to browse his town and found a long lost Roman Villa. I use Google Satellite maps to try and find a parking space in my neighborhood myself, very handy.

September 14th: Today in 1752 England switched to the Gregorian calendar which meant that September 2nd was followed by September 14th. This supposedly led to riots by workers who were robbed of pay for the missing days. No word on whether they got to sleep in an extra hour or not….
