Today In History: First sighting of Pirates

December 30th: Today in 1879 the first performance of Pirates of Penzance took place in England. The first performance was a bit unusual, it was only done to establish copyright in the UK, the play actually opened in April 1880.

Today In History: Wounded Knee Massacre

December 29th: Today in 1890 the US Army killed 153 Lakota Indians in a short battle which left 25 US soldiers dead as well. Most of the US soldiers were killed in friendly fire, never the less twenty medals of honor were given to soldiers for the masscre.

Today In History: Osceola Sparks Second Seminole War

December 28th: Today in 1835 Chief Osceola led a band of 5o Seminole Indians in an ambush that kills the local Indian Agent sparking the second Seminole War. December 27th: Today in 1985 Dr. Dian Fossey was discovered murdered in her home in Rawanda. Fossey is famous for her study of the great apes, her life was made into a movie, Gorillas In The Mist.

Today In History: Scharnhorst Sunk

December 26th: Today in 1943 the British Navy hunted down and sank the German Battlecruiser Scharnhorst. The battle was between surface ships, which suprised me as by this time sensible people sank ships using airplanes.
