January 22nd: Speaking to the new ‘Natives are Restless’ theme, yesterday in 1879 was of one of the worst defeats in the history of the British army, Isandlwana. On the morning of the 22nd a Zulu army destroyed a British force of nearly 1,200 men.

January 19th: Today in 1847 Charles Bent, the first territorial govenor of New Mexico is killed and scalped in front of his family at the start of the Taos Rebellion. Taos had also played a leading part in the rebellion against the spanish in 1680.
January 18th: Today in 1778 Jame Cook becomes the first known european to ‘discover’ Hawaii. The Hawaiians of course sort of knew where it was by then, but hey, point for effort and all.
