July 25th: Today in 1853 Joaquin Murrieta was supposedly killed in a gunfight with California Rangers. Murrieta was a bandit who robbed gold miners and a cold blooded killer, but he became a robin hood type figure after his death and his fictionalized life story was the basis for the later Zorro stories.
